Whether traveling for a long weekend or a luxurious week away, there’s nothing like the satisfaction of a well-packed bag. Arriving at your destination with everything you need — without overpacking! — is a skill not everyone possesses. But we’re here to give you a few tips to help you prepare for your journey stress-free.
- Start by planning your daily wardrobe. Choose ONE outfit for each day of your trip that easily works from day to night. For fall, this can be anything from dark skinny jeans and a blouse to a dress paired with a little jacket, depending on your destination.
- Take a look at the wardrobe you’ve planned out and see which items can be worn multiple times. For instance, do you really need three different pairs of jeans? Next, see if any of your pieces can be mixed and matched together, allowing you to remove one or two of the other outfits. For a seven-day trip, your goal is to pack five outfits that can be mixed and matched for the remaining two days.
- For a weekend trip, choose two pairs of shoes that will work with every outfit: a casual, comfortable pair for day and a dressier pair for at night. For a week-long trip, you can add a third pair to give you more options.
- Add a couple of things to sleep in and an outfit for working out if you plan to hit the gym.
- Start placing your clothes into your suitcase. If it’s nearly full, move on to step 6.
- If you still have room in your suitcase, congratulations! You have the luxury of adding some just-in-case items like a dressier evening look, an extra pair of shoes or jacket, an umbrella, etc.
- Include a flat, packable tote or bag if you plan to do any shopping, as well as a clutch or small bag for evening.
- Finally, don’t forget your toiletries and makeup. Avoid bringing anything large, like a full-size bottle of shampoo or a big can of hairspray. Look for travel-size items whenever possible. When it comes to makeup, bring just the bare essentials: do you really need that eye shadow palette with 20 different shades? We like to pack items that don’t require makeup brushes, like a cream blush and cream eye shadow, to keep things pared down. Be sure to pack anything liquid in a sealed bag or Ziploc in case something spills.
