When it comes to your closet, more isn't always more. In fact, you can actually do more with less if you learn to think like a fashion editor. Instead of staring into your closet groaning, "I have nothing to wear," it's time to pare down your wardrobe, leaving only those items you absolutely love.
Easier said than done, you say? Follow these tips and you'll be well on your way to creating a finely edited wardrobe that leaves you ready for any style situation.
1. First, take a harsh look at everything in your closet and toss or donate anything:
- you haven't worn in 2 years
- that's in poor condition and can't be fixed
- that doesn't fit, flatter, or look great on you
- that is super trendy and no longer in style
If you're undecided about something, or just have a hard time letting go, pack it up into a storage bin and put it in the attic or the back of your coat closet. If you don't miss it a year later, purge it.
2. Now that you've gotten rid of everything you don't need, organize what's left. Aim to create a mini boutique inside your closet full of stuff you WANT to wear that looks great on you.
3. Once organized, start mixing and matching your pieces to create new and interesting looks. Try a belt with a dress or jacket to change up the look; layer blouses, jackets, and sweaters in new combinations; change the neckline of a top by adding a chunky statement necklace... think like a stylist and get creative! The more ways you can wear something, the more value it brings to your wardrobe. Take photos with your cell phone to make getting dressed easier the next time.
4. Vow never again to buy anything that:
- doesn't look great on you
- can't be worn as part of at least three different outfits
- is virtually identical to something you already own (another black cardigan?)
Follow these tips and you'll be well on your way to rediscovering, maintaining and loving your wardrobe.
