It may just be the beginning of Fall, but New York is already buzzing about what's hot for Spring as NY Fashion Week hit Lincoln Center on September 8. Here are a few highlights from some of the best shows from Day 7:
RODARTE
Inspired by Sleeping Beauty and Vincent van Gogh, the collection fittingly included a mix of easy-on-the-eyes colors like Disney character-appropriate pale purple and turquoise, and yellow bringing to mind van Gogh's famed sunflowers, but there were also more moody purples and blues perhaps in nods to the artist's darker works. Similarly, off the shoulder cocktail dresses combined princess-like silhouettes with the grid of Starry Night-like painterly construction. Certainly, these looks aren't for everyone, but there were some more easily wearable looks, including flirty striped skirts with gathered fabric at the top, cropped pants, and color-blocked knit sweaters, to balance out the more avant-garde fashions.

NANETTE LEPORE
It seems no one is quite as excited about the neon trend as Nanette Lepore. The designer, who is known for her feminine cuts and easy-to-wear separates, went rainbow bright for spring with yellow, orange, pink, and blue paving the runway. While the highlighter hued yellows might be difficult for the average woman to pull off, the other shades were often just shy of garish making them kitschy without being unsalable.

MILLY
Milly, by designer Michelle Smith, is of the ilk of contemporary labels that emerged about ten years ago and have been slowly but steadily taking over the market. With a price point that guarantees more widespread market reach, Smith has developed Milly into one of the foremost leaders in feminine, often printed, day wear. This season, Smith stuck to her roots showing her usual graphic prints but integrated a vintage feel into the collection. It was far from retro as natural materials such as wood and tortoise resin made appearances and the slightly preppy cuts also modernized the looks.

PROENZA SCHOULER
In light of their penchant for neon in their last Spring collection it was surprising, especially considering the running trend this season for brights, that Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez's Spring 2012 Proenza Schouler collection felt more Fall than Spring. In a preview, the designers told WWD that they were inspired by 1950s car interiors, Googie architecture, and architect Morris Lapidus, who designed the Fontainebleu Hotel in Miami. "You know, all that questionable taste architecture," said Hernandez. There was nothing questionable, however, about the fantastic geometric designs and expert color usage in the streamlined, sophisticated collection the duo presented.
