Warm weather is finally here, so it’s time to trade in my motorcycle boots for strappy sandals and switch out my puffer coat in favor of a denim jacket. Every year I begin the season with a full closet cleaning in preparation for summer. It’s important to know what I’m working with before I shop for new additions. Here are a few tips on how I clean out my closet:
- Try on everything. If it doesn’t look great on, it’s time to get rid of it.
- If it looks dated, has a stain or a tear, it’s time to get rid of it.
- If I didn’t wear it last summer, it’s time to get rid of it.
Are you sensing a theme here? I am brutal when it comes to cleaning my closet. There’s no sense hanging on to things I might wear one day; I prefer to donate it to someone who will wear it, rather than taking up precious room in my closet.
After I’ve purged the items I no longer need, I move all my summer clothes front and center and move my winter clothes to the back of my closet. What I’m left with is an edited selection of pieces I will (hopefully) love wearing all season long. My style tends not to change too drastically from summer to summer: printed dresses, breezy tunics and caftans, flat sandals and shorts tend to make up my daily uniform. I shop for a few choice additions to freshen up my look and I’m set for the season.
This season, I bought a great printed linen kaftan and a timeless printed tunic from Zara, along with a panama hat from Vince Camuto, as seen in my Instagram photo above. I will get a ton of use out of all of these pieces for years to come.
Once my wardrobe is refreshed, it’s time to overhaul my beauty regime as well. I start by trading in my day cream, foundation and flatiron for lightweight moisturizer with SPF, BB Cream (also with SPF) and beachy waves. A colorful pedicure is also a must.
Warm weather also inspires me to refresh my diet. Suddenly, my cravings turn to lighter fare like fresh fruit, salads, grilled fish and plenty of water. I also trade my daily hot coffee habit in for iced coffee, like the new Bottled Starbucks® Iced Coffee. Not only does it come in great flavors like Coffee + Milk, Vanilla Flavored and Caramel Flavored, but it’s perfect for a mid-day refresh on the go.
