This year’s red carpet looks were relatively tame. Celebs selected everything from pastels to stark neutrals along with eclectic prints, but skin-baring ensembles were kept to a surprising minimum. Two usually over-the-top singers were both pretty demure in sleek black gowns. Here’s a breakdown of some of last night’s most interesting looks from Los Angeles.

Jessica Alba made an impact in a white Piece d’Anarchive bandeau and a yellow Kenzo skirt. A Narciso Rodriguez clutch and Jimmy Choo pumps served as accessories. Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o stood out in a bright patterned Chanel Fall 2014 dress with pleated skirt. She finished off the look with Vita Fede gems and blue Casadei pumps. Balmain’s Pre-Fall 2014 green knotted top and coordinating pleated skirt were Shailene Woodley’s pick for the awards. David Yurman earrings and black Balmain sandals completed the look.

Rihanna brought a bit of the boudoir to the red carpet in Ulyana Sergeenko. Her Spring 2014 Couture corset bodysuit and robe overlay were capped off by Manolo Blahnik sandals. Leslie Mann’s Juan Carlos Obando Spring 2014 gown featured a fun polka dot print. Jennifer Meyer jewelry and orange Saint Laurent sandals rounded out the look. It was a black Barbara Casasola gown with plunging neckline for Rita Ora at the ceremony. She accessorized with a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti heels.

Nicki Minaj toned it down in a black Alexander McQueen sleeveless gown. Gold accents, including eye-catching arm cuffs, polished off the look. Zendaya Coleman opted for this rose patterned Emanuel Ungaro Fall 2014 dress at the awards. John Hardy rings, a clutch by Swarovski and embellished Christian Louboutin ankle strap pumps concluded the look. This altered Atelier Versace textured creation comes from the Fall 2012 collection. Victoria Justice styled the throwback dress with jewels by Kami Lerner and ELAHN Jewelry, a silver Edie Parker clutch as well as Brian Atwood platform pumps.
