The Oscars have always been my favorite unofficial holiday. Starting at 6 p.m. sharp with red carpet coverage, I’m glued to my television until the last award of the night is announced. But it’s never as fun watching the annual fashion and celeb fest on your own, which is why it’s the perfect excuse to throw a party. Here are some of my tips for throwing the ultimate Oscar party.
The Invites
Send out an invite that includes an Oscar ballot for all the awards of the evening. Ask your guests to fill it out and bring it with them as there will be a prize for the person who scores the most predictions. Not only will this encourage a little friendly competition, but it makes some of the lesser known awards more fun (Best Documentary Short, anyone?).
The Dress Code
There are a few ways you can go when it comes to the dress code for the evening:
- Ask your guests to come in their favorite red carpet-ready looks. Not only is Oscar night the perfect excuse for getting dressed up, but we all have those special event dresses in our closets that we hardly ever get to wear — now’s the time! Set up a red carpet at your entry and be sure to take lots of paparazzi-inspired photos and Instagrams to add to the night. You can even set up an E!-inspired mani-cam and ask people “who they are wearing” when they walk through the door.
- Have everyone dress according to the themes of the Best Picture movies. For example, a 70s-inspired dress for American Hustle or rodeo wear for Dallas Buyers Club.
- Make the dress code pajamas! After all, who doesn’t love snuggling up in pj’s for an evening of glamorous celeb-watching? Besides, the Oscars always end after 11:00 p.m. on the east coast, and we all have work or school the next day, right?
The Food:
You certainly don’t want to spend the night in the kitchen, so set up a variety of finger foods in advance for guests to munch on: vegetables and dip, a selection of cheeses, salami and crackers, some lobster or crab salad in endive and perhaps some crowd-pleasing pigs in the blanket. If you prefer to order it in, a selection of sushi and edamame served on elegant platters always works.
For snacks, stick to movie theater favorites served in pretty bowls and dishes like popcorn, Milk Duds and Twizzlers.
The Drink:
Every party needs a signature cocktail. Try the delicious Glamour Shot served in shot glasses rimmed with edible gold flakes.
- Ingredients: 1 oz. Baileys® Vanilla Cinnamon, 0.5 oz. Goldschlager® Cinnamon Schnapps Edible gold flakes (Optional – found at most baking stores)
- Directions: Rim shot glass with gold flakes. Mix ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a shot glass. (Legal: This recipe contains no more than 0.6 fl oz. of alcohol per serving.)
Baileys Irish Cream. Stay Stylish. Drink Responsibly.
