Red carpet: Glamour wins out over getups at the MTV Video Music Awards

This year's MTV Video Music Awards in Brooklyn brought out a bevy of stars outfitted in some surprisingly glamorous ensembles. Sure, there were some spectacle-inspiring looks, but most celebs saved the drama for the performances. Crystal embroidery, feathers and sheer details all proved popular, while most accessories appeared rather understated. Take a look at some of the more exceptional outfits from the annual award show.



Katy Perry made an impact on the red carpet in this leopard print Emanuel Ungaro Fall 2013 dress with gold embellishments. She rounded out the look with Anita Ko jewels as well as black and gold Celine ankle strap sandals. Miley Cyrus arrived in a vintage Dolce & Gabbana ensemble consisting of a black crop top and pants decked out with colorful embellishments. A unique updo and black Giuseppe Zanotti platform sandals wrapped up the look. It was an Atelier Versace Fall 2013 bustier gown with studded accents for Selena Gomez at the music industry event. Lorraine Schwartz emerald earrings and Versace pumps served as accessories.



Taylor Swift picked up her Moonman in a sultry Hervé Léger by Max Azria embellished gown with daring neckline. Lorraine Schwartz and Ofira both supplied her jewelry, while those pumps came from Prada. Givenchy's Fall 2010 Couture collection was the source of Ciara's semi-sheer creation. The gown really made an impression thanks to its crystal embroidered details and that feather hemline. Rita Ora also opted for high glamour in this crystal-encrusted Alexandre Vauthier Fall 2013 Couture gown with feathered skirt. Black and gold sandals finished off the look.



Jennifer Hudson selected a Christian Dior Fall 2013 houndstooth strapless top paired with a black asymmetrical skirt. Lorraine Schwartz gems and black Christian Louboutin pumps completed the look. This spiked nude Amato Couture by Furne One sleeveless gown was Ellie Goulding's polished pick for the awards. She accessorized with jewels by both Lynn Ban and Penny Preville as well as Brian Atwood nude suede pumps. Model Erin Wasson put it all on display in this incredibly sheer black Alexandre Vauthier Fall 2013 Couture dress. A black headwrap and matching sandals by Giuseppe Zanotti concluded the look.

Even though we were secretly rooting for some ridiculous getups out in Brooklyn, we actually liked this year's more sophisticated vibe.
