Luckily, I have a little bit of time before I have to worry about greys popping in and covering up roots, but I do know plenty of women who are currently having that problem, so I thought I'd do a little bit of research and find the best products out there to help cover up those annoying grey hairs. My biggest pet peeve when coloring hair is the dry time. Waiting 30 to 40 minutes with a cap on your head and that smell lingering is something unbearable, so on top of finding the best of the best in root cover-ups it was also a goal of mine to find products that would eliminate, or at least minimize, these issues. I uncovered three products that are a little pricey, but are definitely worth having on hand in between salon visits!
The Spray
Women use hairspray pretty much every day so it was only a matter of time before hair color was put into an aerosol can. The Rita Hazan Root Concealer comes in five different colors (blonde, dark blonde. light brown, dark brown/black, and red) and will cover your roots in just one quick spray. Although the light stream helps control where the dye goes, it is very easy to press a little too hard and it is even easier to get a little too much in one spot, so my advice is to try it out a little by spraying some on a napkin to make sure you get the pressure of your finger down before trying to put in on your roots. The best thing about the spray is it won't get all over your hands or anywhere else--like eyeglasses.
The Marker
When I first came across this one I wasn't sure it was going to be any good because my experience has taught me that any product that comes in pen or marker form, like the nail art pens, don't work too well. But it seemed like a good product to at least investigate, and when I did, I really found nothing bad about it. The ColorMark Touchback looks exactly like a flat point permanent marker and it's used pretty much the same way: you simply color over your roots. Be sure to pull your hair away from your scalp otherwise you will end up with spots on your head (if this happens it's pretty easy to smudge away with a finger). It dries in minutes and will not flake off when you brush your hair or sweat like some other dye pens.
The Shadow
When I saw this next product I didn't get how this could work and how they were able to put such a price tag on it, but then I dug a little deeper. The Color Wow Root Cover Up looks like an eye shadow at first glance so the natural reaction is to think, 'My eye shadow doesn't always stay on so how will this?' But to be 100 percent honest, I didn't read one review that was negative. Although it is not the most cost-efficient option for root touch-ups, it definitely seems to be worth a try at least once. The powder will adhere to your hair, not your skin, so you won't have to worry about it looking dry or being obvious, it becomes completely camouflaged. The best part about this product is there is no dry time like the other two and no smell.
