New York Fashion Week coverage provided by The Fashion Spot
Yesterday marked the official kick-off of NY Fashion Week Fall 2013 collections at Lincoln Center. Here are a few highlights from some of the best shows from Day 1:
BCBG MAX AZRIA
Fall 2013 was inspired by "the beautiful history inlaid within the architecture of Istanbul and the eclectic style of the gypsies of southern Europe; contrasted by the artwork of contemporary artist Phil Frost," which Max and Lubov Azria translated into a layered, gypsy style of dress complete with high-impact prints, patterned fur, laser cut leather and long, loose silhouettes. But the one thing the crowd could not stop buzzing about? The cozy beanies the models wore to accessories the blue, burgundy, black, green and soft neutral collection.

RICHARD CHAI LOVE
Chai had been going in a more fashion-forward direction the past few seasons, but Fall 2013 showed a change with a more clean cut, conservative approach. Monochrome slip dresses, knee-length pencil skirts, boyfriend coats, slim-fit trousers, plaid separates, and military-inspired outerwear made up the mostly neutral and jewel-toned collection.

TADASHI SHOJI
Given his popularity among Hollywood stars, it was fitting that Tadashi Shoji was inspired by the film Anna Karenina for his romantic collection this season. Other influences included Czarist Russia and the fall of the Romanov Dynasty, which translated into vintage-inspired gowns, many of which featured cinched waists, lace (including of the high-neck variety) and fitted silhouettes. The most interesting looks, however, were the floor-length velvet ones. Velvet isn't traditionally considered the most flattering fabric to wear head-to-toe, but the monochrome pieces the designer presented may well usher in a red carpet trend.
