Fresh crop: cropped flares are the go-to of the season

$

With statement shoes trending this season, it’s absolutely necessary to choose the right bottoms to show them off. Skirts and dresses are obviously no-brainers, but what if you’re more the jeans and trousers type (like me)? Two words: cropped flares. Cut with a narrower hip and thigh, cropped flares are much easier to wear than gauchos, plus the slight flare helps balance out your frame. For the most leg-lengthening, figure-flattering fit, choose a style that hits below the widest point of your calf but well above your ankle.

With the change of the seasons, also comes a change in your makeup. Summer’s berry and nude lips are now going bold in shades of red, purple and brick to really make an impact for the season. Perfect for day or night, a bold lip can go a long way with little other makeup on for day or a full contoured face for a night on the town.

Fall 2015 must-have: leather leggings

I can’t tell you how many nights I’ve asked if I could just go out in my “stretchy pant” because for me, comfort is key. This season I’m thrilled that comfort and style are blending perfectly in the must-have pants of the season — leather leggings. You can dress them up with heels and a blouse for date night or go low-key casual by day with an oversized sweater and booties for a look that is stylish and great for brunch or errands. Style tip: while real leather leggings will set you back a few hundred dollars, faux leather gives the same effect at half the price!

Glow-in-the-dark Halloween pajamas for kids

I made the mistake of allowing my daughters to try out their Halloween costumes early. They wanted to wear them so much that I actually feared the ensembles would wear out before the big night, which is why I quickly ordered some glow-in-the-dark Halloween pajamas. Like a costume, these types of PJs let kids pretend they’re something (or someone) else, but they’re much more durable and comfortable. And–bonus!–if you really do need a costume, several glow-in-the-dark Halloween pajamas can fit the bill. Just check out the skeleton styles featured below.

Holiday home: Halloween marquee decor

Somehow I missed the holiday home decor gene. Still, I like to have a little something fun and festive in the house when the time is right. This season, I’m all about the Halloween marquee. In an otherwise normally-decorated room, these lighted decorations add just a little feeling of frivolity without wreaking the house’s overall theme. And for you DIYers, there are plenty of Halloween marquee craft kits. Check out the witch’s hat and skull styles below and coordinate (or clash) to your heart’s content.

It’s time to stash away your everyday baseball cap that hides a bad hair and swap it out for fall’s fedora and Panama hats that are reminiscent of the 70s. Stylish with a pair of sneakers and jeans for a casual day out or whether you’re headed to brunch with girlfriends in a plaid shirtdress and knee-high boots, these hats complete every outfit and make it easy to do your hair on mornings when there’s just never enough time.

As we reported last month, poncho sweaters so on trend for fall 2015 (read more here). They’re the perfect extra layer for cooler days. But as autumn advances and temperatures begin to fall further, capes are a great way to achieve a similar look with a bit more warmth. Universally flattering and comfortable (especially great if you’re pregnant), the styles featured below can go from the office right through the weekend. Capes are trendy this season, yes, but they’re classic enough to be worn forever.

Add some edge with a longline vest

As much as I loved late-fall’s sleeveless blazer trend in theory, it never really worked in practice. Worn layered, it was too hot; worn by itself, I felt naked. Against my better judgement, I bought a longline vest (same sartorial idea) a few weeks ago and–to my great surprise–I adore it! With faux leather or coated skinnies and a sweater or paired with denim and ankle booties, longline vests are like an edgier version of the classic blazer. Will they become a wardrobe classic? Doubtful, but I highly recommend adding one of these styles as an affordable trendy piece for fall 2015.

Found: Stylish wool coats that are actually warm

warm wool coat

Q. I’m on the hunt for a stylish wool coat that is actually warm. Wool blends aren’t warm enough for Midwestern winters. I’d love to see some suggestions for 100% wool coats and if you know of any with Thinsulate or similar layer for extra warmth, that’s even better.

A. There are a few brands that offer wool coats lined with Thinsulate (or a similar insulation) which provide an added layer of warmth without the bulk or puffiness of down or quilted linings like jcrew.com and landsend.com. Lands’ End even goes the extra mile with temperature ratings for all of their coats. The insulated wool styles tend to be pretty basic and classic, in general, so if you’re looking for one of this season’s hottest coat trends, you might have to layer up for warmth.

Other than insulated lining, look for wool coats with details like faux fur trim, belted styles and hoods which can all help keep you much warmer in the winter.

Here are a few warm wool coat styles we’re liking this season:
