Fall must-have: classic cable knit sweaters

$
0
0

Autumn and winter trends vary from year to year, yet one style stays nearly constant: cable knit sweaters. Besides their warmth and easy, comfortable fit, they are also so chameleon-like. Whether you prefer classic natural ivory or a rich jewel-like color, cable knit sweaters work beautifully with jeans and boots but also look amazing with edgier ensembles like leather (or faux) skinnies and high-heeled ankle boots. Whether you save or splurge is up to you…just make sure you add a cable knit sweater or two to your wardrobe.

Truly wearable over-the-knee boots

It always seems to shock people when I say that one of the most-often worn boot styles in my wardrobe is a pair of great over-the-knee boots. Maybe it’s the “Pretty Woman” connotation, or maybe it’s the thought that a mom of two would wear them with gusto. Who knows? Regardless, over-the-knee boots are back for fall 2014, and I have to say they are on my list of top must-buys for the season. With a flat or low heel, this style looks perfectly casual and chic with skinny jeans, leggings or skirts and tights. Take the heel a little higher and you have the perfect look for a night out. Although there are styles in all price ranges, I totally recommended spending a little more. Trust me…you’ll be wearing them until the sandals come out again next year.

Faux fur fall picks

As far as I’m concerned once the weather starts to turn dreary, you have every right to start wearing your faux fur. It’s cozy, chic and totally 0n trend this fall season in everything from vests and coats to an infinity scarf. Try a little a time with jeans and boots or wrap a faux fur scarf around a plaid sheath dress for a dressed up look.

Casual cool: dressed up track pants for all body types

I will admit that it took me awhile to warm up to the whole track pants trend. Sure I love them for lounging around the house but for going out? It just didn’t feel right. After trying a pair that worked beautifully for my body type, however, I’m now firmly on the bandwagon. With their drapey fit, dressed up track pants are the perfect choice when you need something in between ultra-casual and dressed up. And, in some cases (see the Banana Republic style below), these fancified joggers are really evening-appropriate. If you feel stuck in a jeans rut, give this style a try this fall.

Go glam in sequins this season

Usually sequins are reserved just for special occasions and for around the holidays. Lucky for us girls that love to glam it up, this fall season sequins are everywhere. Go for a little by carrying a fancy clutch or go for a full beaded and sequin dress for a night out on the town to really amp up your style.

Fun, festive Halloween skull accessories for adults

The skull motif in fashion is easy to appreciate but hard for some of us to pull off in large doses. Sure, that Alexander McQueen skull jacquard looks cool but it rarely works at PTA meetings or in the boardroom. One of my favorite ways to add a little of this marvelously macabre detail is through accessories. Subtle (or maybe not-so-subtle) skull accessories are especially fun during the Halloween season. For the office, a subdued pair of cufflinks or a charm may strike the right balance. When the weekend rolls around, break out a fantastic skull-emblazoned scarf or wallet. Wear a little or wear a lot…just have some fun with skull accessories this Halloween season.

If you’re like me and live in west coast weather, you’re still waiting for fall to arrive. However the nights are getting colder and chilly days will soon be here. A sweater coat or poncho is the perfect item to wear in fall weather. Pair it with jeans and a long sleeve t-shirt or a dress and boots for a look that is both warm and chic.

Cozy up to a blanket scarf

One of my favorite purchases last winter was a huge, soft blanket scarf. It looked cool draped and twisted, but even better, it was extremely warm and versatile. If you didn’t partake in the blanket scarf trend last year, there’s no time like the present! Available in literally every price range, these oversize scarves are like chameleons. Tie and loop them like a traditional scarf, knot and wrap like a cowl, use them as wraps or–perfect for those cold holiday flights–use them as blankets. If you happen to be breastfeeding…instant cover. And, since the holidays are upon us, it doesn’t hurt to mention that you can’t go wrong gifting one of these fantastic styles.

The past few seasons have proven that the leopard print trend is here to stay. This season try a sweater, a scarf, a pair of sneakers, a dress or even a coat, in the iconic print. Just wearing a little bit of leopard will get you in touch with your wild side.

It may not be this week, it may not be next week, but it’s only a matter of time before the mercury takes a nosedive in your part of the country. Today was the start of that week for me and (true story) my toddler wound up with socks on her little hands because I couldn’t find mittens. Before you have to improvise like that, why not be proactive and just pick up hat and mitten sets for your kids? The styles featured below are cute and toasty warm, which may just entice your little ones to wear them without fuss.

Take a shine to coated sweaters

Without a doubt, coated denim is one of fall’s standout looks (read more about our coated denim picks here), but jeans aren’t the only things getting special treatment. Waxing, foiling, lacquering…coated sweaters are a great way to add some shimmer and shine as we move into the holiday season. Of course they can be worn with jeans for an uber-casual weekend look, but don’t be afraid to wear coated sweaters with dressier styles, too. Warm and festive? Sounds like a winner to me.

Chunky knits add style and warmth to chilly days

Now that the days are shorter, it’s more important now than ever to make sure your sweater wardrobe is up to date. Get a healthy dose of style and warmth with a chunky knit sweater, scarf or hat this fall season. The heavy knit is almost so warm that you can leave the jacket behind and just wear with jeans and boots or for days that require extra dress, pair with a midi skirt or over a sheath dress for a great chilly day look.

Having children has a tendency to educate and focus us in ways we never imagined. Mother, musician and celebrity Shakira is no different, which led her to create the Barefoot Foundation, benefiting early childhood developmental initiatives around the world. As part of this worthy endeavor, Shakira and Fisher-Price have teamed up to create a line of toys and baby gear that will help stimulate infants’ development. In bright colors and sporting adorable wildlife characters, each piece in this collection helps little ones learn and grow through play. The purchase of the First Steps collection also directly benefits the Barefoot Foundation. See the entire line and pre-order your favorites at amazon.com.

Dress-up for the holidays in tulle skirts for mom and daughter

There’s nothing like dressing up in a big tulle skirt to make you feel like a princess during the holiday season. This year you and your little one can match it up in everything from holiday photos to your annual New Year’s Eve party in fluffy tulle skirts. Go for a casual take by pairing it with flats and a graphic tee or glam it up with a cashmere jeweled sweater and heels for one perfect look.

Picture-perfect holiday clothing for kids

One of my favorite late-fall activities has to be our annual family photo shoot. With a fun photographer in a great outdoor location, it’s really no problem to get all of us in a happy mood, which equates to some outstanding images. Getting everyone dressed beforehand, though, can be really hard. If family photos are in your future, I highly recommend going the route of coordinating-but-not-matchy-matchy. Outfits like the holiday clothing for kids featured below can be varied to fit each child’s personality while still keeping in one color scheme or theme. And if you want to make it really easy on yourself, try shopping from one brand’s offerings. Sites like Gymboree, Old Navy, J. Crew and Gap do a great job of keeping colors consistent across all sizes and styles.

While I love arts and crafts kits as much as the next mom, not every kid out there enjoys making crafts every week. This holiday season, I’m loving the Foodstirs kits that encourage kids to get in the kitchen and start cooking. The Foodstirs kits can be purchased individually or as a subscription service being delivered to you or your gift recipients home once a month. The kits include the recipes, dry ingredients and any specialty cooking tools or craft supplies that the recipe will need. For the holidays they have a Gingerbread People Kit and a Dreidel Cookie Kit that makes a great gift for any budding chef, especially for friends and family that live far away!

‘Tis the season for festive red lipstick

Other than liquid eye liner, the most feared cosmetic has to be bright red lipstick. As someone who considers it to be one of her signature looks, I’ll freely admit that there is some work that goes into the perfect red pout, but the payoff (especially around the holidays) is so worth it. The trick to a red lip is finding your perfect shade. Orange-based red tones will do wonders for warm complexions while blue-based varieties work well for those of us who are cool-toned. Trust me when I say that you’ll know it when you find one that works. With the perfect hue, it’s so easy to create a party-worthy face in just a matter of minutes. And since a red lip is so dramatic, it allows you to save time on the rest of your look.
