Tough-chic quilted leather (and faux leather) accents for fall

$

When it comes to fall fashion, there are just some colors and prints that we expect (hello, burgundy and plaid). Fall 2014 is throwing us all a curveball, however, with the addition of florals and pastels. As new and fresh as it seems, there’s a real margin for error, which means we need to make other wardrobing choices to tone down such springy fabrics. Leather–quilted leather specifically–is perfect. As an accent like epaulets on a sweater or in slightly larger doses like a skirt or jacket, it’s nearly impossible to overdo it. And if you’re looking for something with maximum fashion staying power, choose a classic quilted leather wallet or clutch.

Go hands-free with fall’s best belt bags

With Normcore’s popularity, it was really only a matter of time before the fanny pack resurrected itself as a trend. Well, it’s back, but (shockingly) the 21st Century fanny pack isn’t really all that bad. First, there’s the name change to belt bags or fanny bags. The real difference, however, comes with the aesthetics. Rich leather has replaced the quick-to-stain ripstop nylon, structure has replaced sagging shapelessness, and refined hardware has taken the place of plastic snaps and hooks. You can’t argue with the convenience of belt bags, either. Whether you need to keep valuables close or need to go hands-free, if there was ever a time to try this trend, it’s now!

Packing tips: How to travel like a pro

$

Whether traveling for a long weekend or a luxurious week away, there’s nothing like the satisfaction of a well-packed bag. Arriving at your destination with everything you need — without overpacking! — is a skill not everyone possesses. But we’re here to give you a few tips to help you prepare for your journey stress-free.

  1. Start by planning your daily wardrobe. Choose ONE outfit for each day of your trip that easily works from day to night. For fall, this can be anything from dark skinny jeans and a blouse to a dress paired with a little jacket, depending on your destination.
  2. Take a look at the wardrobe you’ve planned out and see which items can be worn multiple times. For instance, do you really need three different pairs of jeans? Next, see if any of your pieces can be mixed and matched together, allowing you to remove one or two of the other outfits. For a seven-day trip, your goal is to pack five outfits that can be mixed and matched for the remaining two days.
  3. For a weekend trip, choose two pairs of shoes that will work with every outfit: a casual, comfortable pair for day and a dressier pair for at night. For a week-long trip, you can add a third pair to give you more options.
  4. Add a couple of things to sleep in and an outfit for working out if you plan to hit the gym.
  5. Start placing your clothes into your suitcase. If it’s nearly full, move on to step 6.
  6. If you still have room in your suitcase, congratulations! You have the luxury of adding some just-in-case items like a dressier evening look, an extra pair of shoes or jacket, an umbrella, etc.
  7. Include a flat, packable tote or bag if you plan to do any shopping, as well as a clutch or small bag for evening.
  8. Finally, don’t forget your toiletries and makeup. Avoid bringing anything large, like a full-size bottle of shampoo or a big can of hairspray. Look for travel-size items whenever possible. When it comes to makeup, bring just the bare essentials: do you really need that eye shadow palette with 20 different shades? We like to pack items that don’t require makeup brushes, like a cream blush and cream eye shadow, to keep things pared down. Be sure to pack anything liquid in a sealed bag or Ziploc in case something spills.

Voila! You’re on your way to being a pro packer. For more packing tips, check out the video below:

Trendspotting: Zipper-hem sweaters

There’s nothing more enjoyable on fall’s first chilly days than wrapping up in soft layers and chunky sweaters. Autumn 2014 is elevating this cozy look into an art form, and there’s no better way to show off both than with zipper-hem sweaters. Available in literally every price range, this more-rugged take on the novelty sweater looks great when paired with leggings or jeans for casual days. And, as the RD Style sweater demonstrates below, the same zipper-hem sweaters actually look very downtown cool when paired with dressier skirts or trousers. Another plus is that you control where the zippers fall. Unzip to reveal a base layer or to give yourself a little extra room in the midsection (hello, first trimester), then zip the same sweater back together when you’re headed to the office.

Dainty ballet flats have their place in a little girl’s wardrobe, but serious everyday play calls for a shoe choice with a little more durability and attitude. With the moto trend returning for fall 2014, moto boots for girls are a brilliant choice for cool autumn and cold winter days. In classic, basic black or a fun color, this rough-and-tumble style is actually very versatile. As with every season, it’s always a wise idea to have a few neutral pieces in your wardrobe to mix-and-match with bright and trendy pieces. This season you can skip the off-white and tan and opt for a pretty grey color to balance out your look. From knee-high grey boots to cable knit sweaters, grey is the “it” neutral of the season.

Menswear-inspired must-have: oxfords

Like tweed, boots and sweaters, menswear-inspired styles re-emerge every fall. The only difference from year to year is how we adopt this look into our wardrobes. For fall 2014, borrowed-from-the-boys oxfords are an absolute must-have. The great thing about this style is it’s versatility. Wear them with boyfriend jeans on the weekend, then pair the same styles with a sleek pair of trousers for work. The hardest part about working this trend is just deciding whether to go with a basic neutral or a cool metallic or color.

Kiwi Crate adds three new craft subscriptions for ages 3-16

Every month my kids look forward to getting their craft subscription boxes but in the past the monthly Kiwi Crate has been too advanced for my youngest and too easy for my oldest. This month Kiwi Crate has launched three new craft subscription boxes to appeal to every age group from 3 to 16. Koala Crate is for ages 3 to 4 and is a joint partnership between Highlights and Kiwi Crate to offer preschoolers the tools to make something fun while also learning. Tinker Crate is for ages 9 to 14 and is for those kids that love learning about science, engineering and technology to make new inventions and art. Doodle Crate is for girls ages 9 to 16 to inspire their DIY creativity to make fashion products like candles, pencil pouches and dip-dyed scarves. Each crate can be purchased as a gift or as a monthly subscription starting at $12.95 a month. Now it will be much easier come the weekend when everyone has their own project to keep them busy!

Effortlessly cool capes for cooler days ahead

Practicality and fashion (sadly) don’t always go hand in hand. A case in point is the whole trend of throwing a great coat over your shoulders and heading out the door. It looks so effortlessly cool and chic but for those of us who have to use our arms regularly…no way. Thankfully capes are plentiful and very well done this fall. Like the tossed-on coat, they give your overall look a very “cool chick” vibe with the added bonus of the ability to rifle through your bag for your keys, carry a cup of coffee, change a diaper…whatever your day requires. And if you happen to be pregnant or nursing, a great cape may just turn out to be your best friend thanks to their loose, adjustable fit.

Lovely leather looks for fall

When it’s not yet cool enough to bring out your puffy parka jacket, then opt for a trendy and stylish leather jacket instead. A leather jacket takes any look to a whole new style level whether you pair it with jeans and boots for a casual look or throw it over a blouse and pencil skirt for a different dressed up look for a day at the office. While we know that wearing leather isn’t for everyone, you might want to try a vegan leather jacket as a cool alternative that is more budget-friendly and animal-friendly. This season try it both ways for a look that will let you shine.

The fall season is a great time to try something new and if you haven’t already done the metallic look, it’s a definite must-try this season.
