Kids’ shark clothing and accessories to celebrate Shark Week

Like The Wizard of Oz and Peanuts holiday cartoons, Discovery Channel’s Shark Week has become a late-summer favorite for the whole family. Sure, we could say we love it purely for it’s educational value, but really, who doesn’t love watching episode after episode of one of our favorite predators chomping down on a rubber seal in the name of science? If your kids, like mine, are big shark and Shark Week fans, they’ll probably love the shark clothing and accessories available to them. The great thing about the shark-themed styles: they are practically gender-neutral and fun for any age. Choose pajamas, swimwear or rainboots…there are plenty of shark clothing and accessory styles to take them straight through until Shark Week 2015.

It’s official, double denim is a trend, appearing on the covers of both Marie Claire and Glamour magazines this month. But how to wear this tricky trend without looking like a “don’t”? The key is to choose tops and bottoms in different washes. Dark denim + light denim or denim worn with white or black denim. Below are some of our favorite denim shirt/pant combinations for inspiration.

As we transition our summer to fall wardrobe, we’re putting away the casual shorts and tanks we favor in the heat and trading them for skirts and blouses that can last from day to night. This fall’s hot day-to-night look is monopolized by the versatile pencil skirt. Perfect for a day at the office paired with heels and a smart blazer or great for cocktails with the girls with booties and a graphic tee, the pencil skirt is the perfect way to welcome fall.

Fall denim trend: coated denim for every body type

I’ll be the first to admit that I have a momiform (mom uniform). Skinny jeans, a black top or sweater and sandals or boots…it’s what you catch me in day after day, season after season. As boring as it may sound, I do like to put my own spin on the look with interesting textures and accessories. One of the textures topping my list this year is coated denim. Looking very much like leather but with easier care instructions, coated denim gives your overall look a little attitude. Of course it’s great for a night out, but coated denim is also very daytime-appropriate with a tee and oversize cardigan or a chambray shirt and slip-on sneakers. If black feels a bit too heavy-metal-mama to you, try a rich gray or burgundy coated denim. And don’t be afraid to rock this trend if you’re expecting. It’s guaranteed to make you feel confident and sexy no matter your trimester.maternity coated denim

When it comes to back-to-school shopping, finding versatile footwear can be very key. Having a few easy, go-to styles that match nearly everything in your child’s closet can make the difference between a frazzled morning and a calm one. Ankle boots for girls are perfect for just this reason. As soon as the days cool just a bit, she can start wearing styles like the ones featured below with skirts. When the cold hits, the same styles look perfect with jeans or when paired with tights or leggings. And although basic black or brown leather is classic, a metallic may just make her whole ensemble pop.

Get a jump on fall style in equestrian-inspired looks

I can almost feel fall in the air and therefore, my style should look that way too. This season one of the biggest trends is the equestrian-inspired look. Go for feminine blouses featuring a fun horse print, tall skinny boots, structured blazers, neutral skinny plaid pants, quilted bags and puffy vests, and chain link jewelry. Incorporating a few of these items into your everyday wardrobe will make casual days a little more preppy and fun.

It’s a cinch: Dapper Snappers toddler belts

Adjustable waistbands go a long way toward extending the fit and life of kids’ clothing. Still, if you happen to have a really tall, skinny kid, he or she may have an incredibly hard time keeping his or her pants, skirts and shorts up. Of course there are toddler-sized traditional belts on the market, but as we all know, extra buckles and potty-training kids just don’t mesh well. Thanks to an ingenious design, Dapper Snappers toddler belts solve all the problems of waist gap for little ones. With snaps and/or clips, Dapper Snappers affix to the back of a toddler’s waistband. This helps cinch up the slack without making pants feel uncomfortable, tight or difficult to remove. With an assortment of both solid colors and cute prints, you can easily make the belts blend in or become an accessory. If you happen to be pregnant, it’s worth checking out Dapper Snappers for adults, too! Worn on the front of the waistband, they make it easy for you to eek out a few more weeks from your pre-pregnancy clothing.

Try a wedge boot for the fall season

I’m so ready to trade my sandals for boots in the next couple of weeks. I’m secretly hoping for a quick turn of seasons where I live so I can break out all of the boots I’ve stocking up on the last few weeks during the pre-fall sales. While boots are always on trend during this time of year, I’m looking forward to the wedge boot the most this season. From bootie versions to over-the-knee styles, this is one boot to try for a little extra height and style.

Get personal with monogram jewelry for fall

Looking for a trendy new fall accessory? This one has your name all over it…literally. Although it’s really very classic, monogram jewelry pieces are showing up everywhere suddenly. And even if ‘preppy’ isn’t your thing, the newest styles look and feel fresh thanks to funkier fonts and unexpected shots of color. Also, the old rules of letter placement within monograms can go totally out the window. Your own initials work, but why not do something different like the kids’ initials? The styles featured below are some of my absolute favorite monogram jewelry styles around. They’re simple and easy to wear but can make a real statement.

Varsity looks reign supreme this back-to-school season

As a mom, I often long for the innocent cool kid look of yesteryear. You know the slicked back greaser hair, poodle skirts, rolled jeans and letterman jackets. Lucky for my nostalgic heart, the hair and poodle skirts may never come back but the jeans and letterman jackets have made a huge comeback for this back-to-school fall season. Kids everywhere can sport the varsity look with a cool jacket, long cardigan and hip tees. Now if they only brought back 5 cent soda shops, I might call it a win-win for all!

Build a capsule maternity wardrobe with Storq

During my first pregnancy, I bought loads of maternity clothes. Honestly, it was daunting trying to get dressed every morning. What would fit that week? What looked good together? It was a hassle. During my second pregnancy, I wizened up and made the decision to create a capsule maternity wardrobe. With a small collection of high-quality basics, getting dressed was a breeze. If I had it to do over again, I would create the same wardrobe but it would come from one place: Storq. With four exceptional basics–dress, leggings, skirt and tank–you’re covered stylishly from the first to the third trimester (and probably well into the post-partum period). Storq also gives you plenty of buying options. For $195, you can order all four pieces in their Basic Bundle. If you need to pick and choose your pieces, you can also make single purchases. And if you’re feeling uninspired about creating whole ensembles out of your Storq basics, the company’s website is chock-full of styling tips to take you from work to weekend. See the entire line, as well as body and beauty products, at storq.com.

Since it is now officially September and there is only 22 more days until the first official day of the fall season, I can’t think of any better reason to put away the tank tops and shorts in favor of fall wardrobe favorites. This season the shift dress takes center stage and has gotten a makeover from designers featuring details like collars, pockets, buttons and bold colorblocking. So grab your favorite pair of boots and head out in the “it” dress of the season for a perfect fall look that works for day or night.

Send them back to school in Splendid for Stride Rite kids’ shoes

Collaborations are practically a dime a dozen these days. Some miss the mark, but then there are the great ones that make perfect sense and lead to outstanding products. In my opinion Splendid for Stride Rite is one of the great ones. True to their usual design aesthetic, all the kids’ shoes in the new line are solid basics with just enough color and special accents to make them fun and bright. Add the cute looks to Stride Rite’s great fit, and you have the perfect shoes. Most of the Splendid for Stride Rite styles come in sizes to fit babies through big kids with just subtle variations to meet the needs for each age (infant, crawler, walker). And although there are styles that look very feminine, many of the sneakers and crib shoes are perfectly gender-neutral. See the entire line of Mary Janes, sneakers, boots and booties at striderite.com.

If you’re like me and you love a good floral print, the good news is you won’t have to wait until spring again to wear one. This fall it’s all about the dark floral print on everything from blouses to skirts and shoes. If you are typically a solid black only wearer, this is a great print trend for you to try without going too much outside your comfort zone.

Usher in autumn with pumpkin beauty products

If the change of the calendar didn’t tip you off that fall is near, the influx of pumpkin-themed recipes on Pinterest probably did. Although I’m right there with everyone else, cooking and baking everything pumpkin, my favorite way to use the autumnal gourd is packed in pumpkin beauty products. Besides being tasty, pumpkin is actually a fantastic skin brightener and exfoliant. Surprisingly, you can slap some puree on your face for a quick masque, but I prefer ready-made serums, lotions, soaps and creams for their extra shots of antioxidants. If you’re skin didn’t fare so well over the summer, a great pumpkin product may be all you need to get back your glow in time for the holidays.

The denim on denim look is not going away anytime soon and this season it’s about layering your denim too. For a casual vibe, try a denim jacket with your pencil skirt and graphic tees for a fun look that can work day or night. For a different take on the look, try a black or colored denim jacket to really spice up your style.
