Create pretty, kid-friendly artwork with sun print kits

Kiwi Crate arrival day at my house is always a big deal. Getting mail and a box chock-full of crafting goods in one day? It’s almost too much excitement for my 5-year-old. Last month’s Crate came with a sun print kit backpack. My little one had a fantastic time completing the project, and I honestly kind of wished I had one to make myself. In case the term is new to you, sun prints utilize paper or fabric, water, interesting objects like plants or feathers and (you guessed it) the sun to create pretty images with major artistic flair. After a little research, I found several sun print kits that, while geared toward adults, would be easy and fun for the entire family. The sun print kits below are extremely affordable, educational and nearly completely mess-free. For the kids or yourself, take advantage of the dog days of summer and make something fabulous.

Once at the top of every fashion “don’t” list, socks worn with sandals or heels are now a major fashion “do.” Shown on runways, like Hermes and Band of Outsiders, and on the stylish feet of such celebs as Rihanna and Beyonce, it’s hard to ignore the sock-and-sandal trend. To get the look, invest in a few pairs of pretty ankle socks to dress up a neutral pointed toe pump or a sexy ankle strap sandal. You can also try wearing them with flat sandals, like this season’s sporty sandal trend, just be sure to choose feminine clothes to offset your look. Here are a few combos to get your creative wardrobe juices flowing.

Wear black and white for easy summer style

I love wearing color but sometimes, I prefer to go easy and just wear a simple black or white outfit or black and white printed outfit that can go anywhere I go. This summer opt for something simple and chic like a black jumpsuit with a pair of bright pink sandals or a white and black striped maxi dress with wedges that will look fabulous at Sunday brunch.

With hot, muggy summer in full swing, it feels a little wrong thinking about back-to-school shopping right now. Jackets? In July? With so many great end-of-summer sales going right now, though, it just might pay off to be a bit proactive on that fall shopping. One of the hottest trends for kids last spring was the bomber. Going into fall, bomber jackets for kids are just as hot, if not hotter. If you didn’t pick one up a few months ago (or if they outgrew them), this is a fantastic time to buy and save on a style they’ll be wanting as soon as cool weather hits. One of my favorite kid’s brands in recent years, Peek Kids, has just launched a t-shirt collaboration with Disney. Known for their inspiration quotes on shirts for kids and babies, Peek has taken two of Walt Disney’s famous quotes along with a retro Minnie and Mickey illustration to create four unique t-shirts. Available for babies in sizes newborn to 24 months and kids sizes XXS to XL, the t-shirts are sure to make any Disney lover smile. What’s even better is that the t-shirts will be in the same quality and soft cotton material that Peek is known for and that will make parents, very, very happy too.

While I’m drooling over the new Tory Burch for Fitbit collection, my kids can now join in on the fitness band craze with the all new LeapBand by LeapFrog. Available in three colors, pink, blue and green, the LeapBand comes preset with 50 active challenges that kids can easily do like “pounce like a lion” or “leap like a frog,” tracks all your child’s movement throughout the day including and then in turn as their activity progresses it unlocks rewards and games for the child. There is a preset school/quiet mode so technically the child could also wear it to school and there is a virtual pet that you get to take care of by feeding it nutritious snacks and giving it a bath. The rechargeable battery lasts 3-4 days depending on the usage and the LeapBand is also water-resistant. The LeapBand can be also be customized via your computer and on the LeapFrog online site. I think this is going to be a hot seller come holiday time so I suggest stocking up now so you won’t be hunting e-bay for it later this year!

Trendspotting: the mineral pendant necklace

You don’t have to be the new-agey type to love one of the latest mini trends in jewelry: the mineral pendant necklace. With their earthy, minimal vibe, these types of pendants are simple, yet stunning during the summertime. Unlike some of our favorite statement necklaces, mineral pendants–especially pointed, faceted styles–feel wonderfully cool on the skin and never trap heat (remember the bib necklace trend a few summers ago?). Wear them long and dramatic or right at the collar bone. And if you get a little aura cleansing accomplished in the process of wearing a mineral pendant necklace, then all the better.

Denim trend: girlfriend jeans for everyone

$

I’ve always found boyfriend jeans to be extremely hard to wear. The extra bagginess and slouchy design seems to add weight visually in all the wrong places. Still, the effortlessly-cool, downtown look that some women achieve while wearing boyfriend jeans is something I would love to adopt. One of the season’s newest denim trends–girlfriend jeans–may be the answer for those like me. Cut with a slimmer hip and leg, girlfriend jeans still give off a relaxed, cool-girl vibe but with much less fabric to add girth in all the wrong places. Grab a pair in a light or distressed wash (another trend for fall) or a dark wash that easily dresses up. And if you’re pregnant, this is an especially comfortable, figure-flattering fit for those first few post-delivery weeks.

As a mom of three, I’m a huge fan of sneakers. I love when I can mix comfort and fashion so easily. Sneakers have been the top shoe for summer and now with these new Converse x Missoni Chuck Taylors hitting the scene, I’m already planning my wardrobe around them. While it may not be as much as a selection as the Missoni for Target collection that was a sell-out, these shoes still top the must-have list for the late summer and early fall season.
